January Update: New Resources

Book 2 Word Count: 19,266 / 90,000 (21.4%)
(Target is approx. 13,000 at the end of December, 26,000 after January, etc. By the end of June I should be at the 90,000 goal.)

I did a quick search on widgets and saw that there are some neat progress bars available. I added the widget on the left (on mobile devices it’s in the menu). Pretty neat!

As I’ve mentioned in the past, I want to improve as a writer. To this end, one step I took was to pick up additional resources. I’ve been trying to find books that could help me with some of the problems I identified in Book 1.

The Amazon gift card I received for my birthday was put to good use. The resources I acquired are specialized thesauruses; not traditional thesauruses. My goal to do more showing and less telling, and I hope these books aid in that endeavor.

They might not be for more experienced writers, but I think it’ll come in handy for me.

I also scored a Joseph-Beth gift card (Thanks Mike and Lindsey!). Part of it went to pick up a book called Save the Cat! Writes a Novel. I think it’s great! I wish I had it before I wrote Book 1. I think I’m too deep into Book 2 to take full advantage of some of the tips and tricks, but I’ll definitely make full use of it in future works.

As I understand it, Save the Cat was originally created for screenwriters and Jessica Brody adapted it to novels. It boils stories down into fifteen essential plot points that exist in most great stories. I think aspiring authors should pick up a copy, especially if they need assistance in framing their work.

I’m not a classically trained writer. I’ve been flying by the seat of my pants, but I hope to write cool action stories that people can enjoy.
